Top Nine Notable Yankee Stadium events

The name on the marquee says Yankee Stadium, but that doesn't mean that the building at 1 East 161st Street in the Bronx is a baseball-only facility. The two NHL Stadium Series games that will be played there this week will be the first hockey games in Stadium history, but it will merely join more than two dozen other sports, entertainment, and life-altering events that have taken place at the new "House That Ruth Built."

Whether the NHL's entry into Stadium lore turns out to be a harbinger of the future or a two-shot deal remains to be seen, but someday, perhaps one (or both) of those two games between metropolitan NYC rivals will join the list of infinitely memorable events held at the Cathedral of Baseball.

In honor of that possibility, we salute, in chronological order, a nonet of other highly memorable non-baseball activities that have had Yankee Stadium as the RSVP address.

  • OSTEEN CAN YOU SEE? (4/25/2009)
The old Yankee Stadium hosted three sitting Popes, several Jehovah's Witness conventions and perhaps Billy Graham's largest Crusade everůso it may be kind of fitting that the first non-baseball event at the New House was a prayer service led by "The Smiling Preacher" himself, Joel Osteen.
  • POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE (5/13/2009)
How cool would it be to transition from college to the "real world" at one of the most famous addresses in the world? Ask any 2009 graduate of NYU, who attended their commencement ceremonies - with keynote address by Hillary Clinton - at the new Yankee Stadium.
  • SLUGGIN' AWAY (6/5/2010)
From Louis-Schmeling to Ali-Norton, the old Stadium had quite a history of great boxing cards; to date, the only one to happen at the New House was June 2010's "Stadium Slugfest," headlined by Miguel Cotto winning the WBA Light Middleweight Championship with a ninth-round TKO of Yuri Foreman.
  • DOUBLE J (9/13-14/2010 and 7/19-20/2013)
Helping facilitate Robinson Cano's departure for Seattle may have made Jay-Z a rogue in the eyes of Yankees fans, but his two pairs of sold-out concert sets at the Stadium - two with Eminem in 2010 and the others with Justin Timberlake last season - prove that HOVA did indeed once run this town.
  • HAIL TO THE CHIEFS AND VICTORS (11/20/2013)
Both Notre Dame and Army had quite a football history at the old Stadium, so it was only fitting that in November 2010, they met in the first collegiate clash at the new digs. Notre Dame won that first game 27-3, and just weeks ago, they also beat Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl to win the latest one as well.
  • USHERING IN A NEW ERA (12/30/2010)
The second collegiate game at the Stadium was the first of four New Era Pinstripe Bowls, and the debut saw a Syracuse team coached by NYC native Doug Marrone and led by future Giants draftee Ryan Nassib top Kansas State 36-34 after a controversial late penalty prevented the Wildcats from tying the score.
  • FAB OR BIG? (7/15-16 and 9/14/2011)
The summer of 2011 was legendary on stage at the Stadium, as it saw a member of the "Fab Four," Sir Paul McCartney, bring down the house twice in July (with special guest Billy Joel joining him on night two) before the "Big 4" of Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, and Metallica rocked the joint two months later.
  • MATERIAL GIRLS AND MONSTERS OF ROCK (7/6-7 and 9/6-8/2012)
The 2012 concert slate was just as sweet at the Stadium, as Pink Floyd's Roger Waters made a pair of sold-out crowds "Comfortably Numb" on Independence Day weekend before the iconic "Material Girl," Madonna, brought her girlie show to the Stadium just after Labor Day.
  • THE OTHER FOOTBALL (7/22-8/8/2012 and 5/25-6/11/2013)
NYC FC will debut in 2015 at Yankee Stadium, but to date, four big soccer matches have been held at the venue. The two most recent, held last summer, saw the Yanks' NYC FC partner Manchester City top Premier League rival Chelsea and Spain best Ireland in an international friendly.
