One day after Yu Darvish experienced pain in his right triceps during a Thursday throwing session that put his health status in serious doubt, the Chicago Cubs right-hander might have hope for a quicker return than originally feared by the team.

Instead of the right triceps injury diagnosis, Darvish instead is treating right elbow impingement and inflammation.

While the Cubs flew home for a weekend series against the Minnesota Twins, Darvish detoured south to Texas and met with one of the team doctors with his former team, the Texas Rangers. Dr. Keith Meister administered the new diagnosis and gave Darvish a cortisone shot.

According to a Cubs spokesman, Darvish will not throw for the next three to five days, allowing the injection "to settle in."

Darvish, 31, experienced pain in his right triceps during Thursday's throwing session, raising more uncertainty for the veteran starter who hasn't pitched in a game since May 20.

"You could tell he wasn't feeling the greatest," teammate and catcher Chris Gimenez said Friday before the Cubs' 10-6 win over the Twins, per the Chicago Tribune. "I give him credit for trying to explore those options of kind of working through it. The main thing is to get him back healthy. That's priority No. 1.

"I think he's just a little frustrated, to be honest with you. And rightfully so. I know he wants to get himself back out here."

No new timetable for return has been revealed by the team.

The Cubs were optimistic Darvish was about to be activated from the disabled list after he pitched five innings at Class-A South Bend on Monday.

However, the six-year veteran didn't feel as well as he should have following the outing.

"After that game, he was complaining of something," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "Between then and now we've been trying to work through it."

But Darvish's arm didn't respond, and that became obvious during Thursday's session.

"He still felt the pain on extension," Maddon said. "He was unable to really turn it loose."

Darvish is 1-3 with a 4.95 ERA in eight starts for the Cubs. Darvish joined the team on a six-year, $126 million contract in the offseason.
