Don Mattingly has cinder block smashed on chest to motivate Miami Marlins clubhouse
Perhaps none were more unorthodox than what he did Wednesday, when he laid on a bed of cinder blocks, and allowed a professional motivational speaking team to break a concrete block resting on his chest with a sledgehammer.
The stunt was designed to fire up his club down the final stretch of spring training, but Donnie Baseball's toughness was never in question.
Nicknamed "The Hitman" during his playing days, few might have guessed that Mattingly would be the one taking a serious hit to the chest in order to get the juices flowing in his Marlins clubhouse. "It's good for the guys," Mattingly said.
This isn't the first time this motivational team, named Radical Reality, has visited an MLB clubhouse. Marlins third base coach Fredi Gonzalez also invited the team to perform the same stunt when he was managing the Braves in 2015. Both Gonzalez and Mattingly took the hits like champs, and the reception from their team was raucous.
