Trick shot saves Mickelson at Scottish Open
It seemed as though not even a cart path could stop Phil Mickelson from birdie the 13th hole on Thursday at Royal Aberdeen.
"Phil the Thrill" found himself in an awkward position while his ball came to rest on the cart path on 13. Mickelson, known for his flair with a golf club, decided to hit the ball from the path instead of taking his free drop. In true Mickelson fashion, he hit it to 15 feet and ended up making the birdie despite being in a strange lie.
"Lefty" is attempting to repeat as champion of the Scottish Open, one week before defending his 2013 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.
Mickelson shot an opening round 3-under 68, four back of clubhouse leader Rory Mcilroy.
Mcilroy had a incredible shot of his own Thursday, crushing a 436-yard drive that found the green on 13.
Mcilroy is trying to find his form before attempting to take one step closer to a career grand-slam, still needing the Open Championship "Claret Jug" and a Masters "green jacket."
