Jose Pirela's strong season at Triple-A has earned him an All-Star nod for the IL.(AP)
Jose Pirela will be the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders' lone representative in the annual Triple-A All-Star Game, as the SWB leadoff man was named Wednesday as the starting second baseman for the International League squad in the July 16 exhibition.

Pirela, who on Tuesday was named the International League's Player of the Month for June, is hitting .318 with seven homers, 34 RBI, 10 steals, 53 runs, and an .809 OPS in 78 games through Wednesday.

He ranks in the Top 10 in the IL in batting average, hits, runs, and total bases, and he has also deftly handled a position switch of late, moving to the outfield almost full-time following the Yankees' promotion of second baseman Rob Refsnyder to Triple-A in early June.

Pirela will be joined on the team by four men who may be very familiar to Yankees fans; Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay) designated hitter Wilson Betemit and Buffalo Bisons (Toronto) first baseman Dan Johnson were also elected to the game, and Indianapolis Indians (Pittsburgh) outfielder Chris Dickerson and Syracuse Chiefs LHP Aaron Laffey (Washington) were among the 17 chosen by the IL office.

According to a release from the RailRiders, the IL All-Star Team is made up of 13 elected players (Pirela included) who have received the most votes from ballots submitted by club's field managers and general managers, members of the media, and online fan voting, and the elected players are joined by 17 additional All-Stars selected by the International League office.

The IL squad will meet the all-stars from the Pacific Coast League on July 16 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C., and similar to the MLB All-Star Game, the winning league in the Triple-A All-Star game will earn the right for its champion to be the home team in the Triple-A National Championship Game later this fall.

Since the adoption of the inter-league format, the IL holds a 9-7 lead over the PCL in the All-Star Game.
