Yankees add Wade LeBlanc, designate Alfredo Aceves for assignmentBombers also recall RHP Jose Ramirez and option Preston Claiborne to Triple-A
To make room, the team optioned RHP Preston Claiborne to Triple-A and designated RHP Alfredo Aceves for assignment.
LeBlanc, 29, was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Tuesday. He pitched 6 1/3 innings of long relief on May 30 in what was his only major-league outing for the Halos this season, but he was 5-1 with a 3.69 ERA in nine starts at Triple-A Salt Lake earlier this season.
Ramirez, a minor-league starter who was moved to the bullpen full-time this season at Triple-A, had a 0.84 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings over seven appearances for the RailRiders this year. He was up with the major-league team on May 18 as the 26th man for the Yankees' doubleheader with the Pirates, but did not pitch.
Aceves, who was signed to a minor-league deal late in spring training, was called up from Triple-A on May 3 and was 1-2 with a 6.52 ERA in 10 relief appearances (19 1/3 innings) with the Yankees.
Claiborne has had two stints in the majors this year, going 2-0 with a 3.57 ERA in 15 appearances (17 2/3 innings) while in pinstripes.
In addition to the moves, the Yankees also got some good news about an injured member of their bullpen Wednesday when Shawn Kelley threw a successful simulated game. Kelley, who has been on the disabled list for nearly a month with a back issue, told the media he will make an official rehab outing at Double-A Trenton on Saturday, and if all goes well, the righty could be back on the active roster as soon as Monday.
The team also should get outfielder Carlos Beltran back Thursday, as manager Joe Girardi indicated prior to Wednesday's game that he expects to activate Beltran off the DL for their series finale with the Athletics "unless something happens in the next 24 hours."
