NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran has been placed on the 15-day disabled list because a pain-relief injection did not ease the effects of a bone spur in his right elbow.

The Yankees made the move Thursday, three days after Beltran felt a sharp pain in the elbow taking practice swings. Right-hander Chase Whitley is being called up from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes/Barre to start in place of injured ace CC Sabathia in the finale of the Subway Series against the New York Mets.

Beltran says the elbow is improving but not enough to swing at 100 percent. He had a cortisone shot soon after being hurt Monday night and is now taking cortisone pills.

Surgery is the likely option if the cortisone doesn't ease the discomfort.

Pitcher Bruce Billings was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
