NPB’s Rakuten Golden Eagles may be on track to replace their superstar pitcher who just departed for the Yankees with…a former Yankee looking to make a return to professional baseball.

According to Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker, Rakuten has brought 32-year-old RHP Sergio Mitre, who had two stints in the Bronx from 2009-11, into camp on a “trial” basis, with Mitre hoping to win a spot on the team that recently lost ace Masahiro Tanaka to the pinstripes.

Mitre signed with the Yankees prior to the 2009 season and spent two years with the club, going 3-6 with a 5.03 ERA and one save in 39 appearances (12 starts). He was traded to Milwaukee for outfielder Chris Dickerson prior to the 2011 season, but was re-acquired from the Brewers that June and posted an 11.81 ERA in four July appearances before inflammation in his right shoulder ended his season.

A seventh-round pick of the Cubs in 2001, Mitre is 13-30 with a 5.21 ERA overall in eight MLB seasons with the Cubs, Marlins, Yankees, and Brewers.

The Yankees have a lot of recent ties to the Golden Eagles, starting with Tanaka, who played for Rakuten from 2007-2013 before being posted this winter and signing a seven-year deal with the Yankees last month. In addition to Tanaka, the 2013 Rakuten squad also included three ex-Yankees Darrell Rasner, Andruw Jones, and Casey McGehee, and when McGehee left to sign with the Miami Marlins this winter, the Golden Eagles replaced him by signing Kevin Youkilis for the 2014 season.
