Smiling through sure sadness, Mariano Rivera announced in Spring Training that 2013 was his swan song.(AP)
Before his knee injury, speculation ran rampant in the opening weeks of the 2012 season as to whether that was going to be Rivera’s swan song. No one except Rivera may ever know what the answer truly was, but when Mo vowed to return for 2013, speculation about that becoming a “going-away season” ramped up immediately.

So, when Rivera officially decided to announce early in Spring Training that he would indeed hang up the cleats come October, he did so with a phrase that put the rubber stamp on the rumor, saying he had enough gas in the tank for just one more season after uttering this famous quote: “Now you're hearing it from me, it's official: after this year, I will be retired.”

Just like that, the party began – and later that day, he kicked off the retirement tour with his first action in 10 months, pitching a Sandman-esque 1-2-3 inning in the Yankees’ Grapefruit League game against Atlanta.

Business as usual was back, at least for one more go-round.
