With the saves record secured and free agency looming after 2012, the baseball world wondered if that season would be the great Mariano Rivera’s retirement tour.

“The Sandman” himself was mum on the subject, professing only that he would reveal the answer sometime late in the summer…until fate stepped in and made perhaps an unmade decision for him.

While innocently shagging fly balls during batting practice in Kansas City in early May – an activity he partook in every day – one misstep on the warning track at Kauffman Stadium caused Rivera’s right knee to buckle; he crumpled into a heap on the dirt, and was later diagnosed with the torn right ACL that ended his season.

The proudest of the proud, Rivera finally broke his retirement silence in the wake of that injury, offering up six simple words that cemented his status for 2013: “I’m not going out like that.”
