That penultimate week of the 2008 season was quite a memorable one for Mariano Rivera; it began with him saying goodbye to another speed bump in his chase for glory, and ended with him saying the final goodbye to a venerable old friend.

With the Yankees all but officially eliminated from playoff contention, many came to Yankee Stadium on September 21 thinking that not only would it be the final regular-season game ever there, but perhaps the final game period. So, then, how else could it end, but with Rivera closing it out?

It wasn't a save situation, as the Yankees ended up beating Baltimore 7-3, but the final pitch was fittingly thrown by "The Sandman," who after the game decided to take a piece of history with him by stealing some of the dirt from the mound that made him famous…and even on a night of heightened security looking for looters, we're pretty sure New York's finest made an exception to look the other way.
