Heading into 2007, Rivera knew that his lucky 13th save of the season would give him 425 total, putting him past John Franco for the third-most in Major League history.

He got No. 424 to tie Franco on July 5, and had to wait nine more days to get the chance to pass the revered Queens native – but almost one year to the day after he had joined the 400 club, that chance finally came against Tampa Bay, and Mo wasted no time in seizing it.

A one-out single in the ninth by Jonny Gomes brought the tying run to the plate, but Rivera easily fanned Jorge Cantu and Akinori Iwamura in order to put No. 42 at No. 3 all-time.

Mo’s 30 saves in 2007 stand as his lowest total in any season with more than 50 appearances, but as everyone would eventually find out, his best was yet to come.
