Save No. 100 for Mariano Rivera came on a steamy June night in Miami.(AP)
Rivera fittingly hit 99 saves in 1999, and on the brink of his first numerical milestone, “The Sandman” got called upon for perhaps one of his easier ones on a steamy summer night in Miami.

Neither Jason Grimsley nor Todd Erdos could finish out what ended up being an 8-4 Yankees win, and when Erdos walked Cliff Floyd to put two on with two out, he made it a save situation…and Joe Torre knew exactly what to do.

It took Rivera all of two pitches to record his 100th save; after a called strike, he got Kevin Millar to hit a weak grounder to Derek Jeter that got the game-clinching forceout, and what was his 16th save of 1999 helped the Yankees maintain the half-game lead they enjoyed in the AL East – a lead they had just taken the game before and would never relinquish again that season.
