Angels activate Vargas, demote Hanson
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have activated LHP Jason Vargas off the 15-day disabled list, and he will start Tuesday night's game against the Yankees.
Vargas, 30, has been on the disabled list since mid-June and underwent surgery June 26 to remove a blood clot near his left armpit. He was 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA in 14 starts before going on the disabled list and made one rehab appearance with Triple-A Salt Lake last week, throwing 72 pitches in 4.2 innings.
To make room for Vargas, the Angels optioned RHP Tommy Hanson to Triple-A. Hanson was acquired from the Braves last winter for Jordan Walden, and is 4-3 with a 5.59 ERA in 13 starts.
