Kelly Shoppach has opted out of his Minor League deal with Washington, according to Baseball America and insider Jerry Crasnick.

Shoppach, 33, signed the deal with the Nats earlier this month and was assigned to Triple-A Syracuse, where he was 7-for-40 (.219) with 2 RBI in 10 games.

He began the season with the Mariners and hit .196 in 35 games, but was released in mid-June when the team signed Henry Blanco.

For his Major League career, the veteran backstop is a .224 hitter over nine seasons with the Red Sox, Indians, Rays, Mets, and Mariners.
