Woods to put new driver into play at British Open
Woods, who typically uses a Nike VR Tour driver, has been using a Nike VR_S Covert Tour driver throughout his practice rounds at Muirfield.
Nike has confirmed that Woods is using a model of the VR_S Tour but different then the ones sold in stores. Consumers can buy a model that has an adjustable loft feature while the club that Woods is sporting has a fixed loft at 9.5 degrees.
Beth Gast a spokeswomen for Nike Golf has also confirmed that the head is "slightly more pear shaped" then the models available for sale.
While Gast is unsure if Woods will put the new driver in his bag come Thursday, the 14-time major winner is uncertain he will even hit a driver throughout the tournament.
In a press conference on Tuesday, Woods was asked if he would apply an iron-off-the-tee strategy similar to the one that lead him to the Claret Jug in 2006 at Royal Liverpool.
"I only hit one driver that week," Woods said. "This golf course is playing similar to that. It's quick. And so far I've played a couple of days now, three days, and I've only hit a couple of drivers here."
Woods tees off on Thursday at 9:45 EDT with Louis Oosthuizen and Graeme McDowell in pursuit of his fourth win at the British Open and first since 2006.
