The Yankees officially announced Monday afternoon that Alex Rodriguez has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment, and will do so on Tuesday with Class-A Charleston.

According to the team, Rodriguez will start Tuesday's RiverDogs game against Rome at third base, and will play a minimum of three innings.

No further details have been announced, but with position players getting a 20-day rehab window in the Minor Leagues, a successful debut on Tuesday night means the Yankees have until July 22 to activate A-Rod.

His return could be a big boost for the Yankees; through Sunday's game, which was the team's 81st, the Yankees are hitting just .237 against left-handed pitchers and have gotten a .231-4-23 line from five different third basemen.
