Former WNBA President Val Ackerman has been hired as the commissioner of the new Big East Conference and will be introduced as early as Wednesday, according to a Bloomberg Business report.

The new incarnation of the Big East begins operations on Monday, July 1, and Ackerman has reportedly been considered a leading candidate for the job since the search began.

The New Jersey native will become the fifth active female leader of a collegiate athletics conference, joining Ivy League executive director Robin Harris, Atlantic 10 commissioner Bernadette McGlade, Patriot League head Carolyn Schlie Femovich, and America East commissioner Amy Huchthausen.

Ackerman has an extensive basketball resume, including her appointment by outgoing NBA Commissioner David Stern as the first head of the WNBA, a post she held from 1996 through 2005. She has also been a staff attorney for the NBA, served as the first female president of USA Basketball from 2005 to 2008, and is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame board of trustees.

In an email statement, Stern said that Ackerman “brings all of that experience with intelligence, a keen analytical ability, an intense work ethic and a winning management style.”
