The NFL has released the following statement in regards to now-former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez and the investigation into his involvement in the fatal shooting of Odin Lloyd:

“The involvement of an NFL player in a case of this nature is deeply troubling. The Patriots have released Aaron Hernandez, who will have his day in court.

“At the same time, we should not forget the young man who was the victim in this case and take this opportunity to extend our deepest sympathy to Odin Lloyd’s family and friends.”

Hernandez was released by New England on Wednesday morning, hours after he was taken into police custody at his home in North Attleboro, Mass. Formal charges have not been filed, but Bristol County District Attorney Samuel Sutter confirmed in a statement that Hernandez would be arraigned later Wednesday at Attleboro District Court.
