Eric Mangini has been hired by the San Francisco 49ers as a senior offensive consultant.

The former head coach of the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns is getting back into coaching after a two year hiatus as a TV analyst for ESPN.

Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports first reported on Mangini's hiring.

Given his defensive background in coaching, it's unclear how Mangini will fit into the 49ers' staff on offense. There is some speculation that his primary role will be helping offensive coordinator Greg Roman break down how defenses might attack the 49ers' offense.

Whatever Mangini's role, the 49ers have added a former NFL head coach to a staff that will try to lead the team to its second consecutive Super Bowl.

Mangini had a 33-47 regular-season record in five seasons as a head coach -- three with the Jets and two with the Browns.
