An MRI given to Kevin Youkilis on Monday came back negative, but a stint on the disabled list became a reality when Youkilis was disabled retroactive to April 28 with what the New York Yankees are calling a lumbar spine sprain. Youkilis was scheduled to receive an epidural.

Signed to a one-year deal in the offseason to replace the injured Alex Rodriguez at third base, Youkilis is batting .266 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 17 games and has a history of back trouble. David Adams was a name that was considered a replacement, but the Yankees instead called up infielder Corban Joseph from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Joesph got the call because unlike Adams, he's on the Yankees' 40-man roster and Adams can't be summoned until May 15.
