Yankees add IF Jayson Nix and OF Ben Francisco to 40-man roster
Infielder Jayson Nix and outfielder Ben Francisco have been officially added to the 40-man roster, and to make room, the team has designated RHP David Aardsma for assignment and outrighted RHP Sam Demel, who was claimed on waivers from Houston on Thursday, to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.
The Yankees also made a trio of Minor League moves; outfielder Melky Mesa has been optioned to Triple-A, infielder David Adams – who was DFA’ed when Vernon Wells was acquired on Tuesday – has been re-signed to a Minor League deal, and the following 11 players have officially been re-assigned to Minor League Camp: RHPs Jim Miller, Preston Claiborne, and Branden Pinder; LHPs Juan Cedeno, Vidal Nuno, and Josh Spence; infielders Dan Johnson, Jose Pirela, and Gil Velazquez; outfielder Thomas Neal; and catcher Bobby Wilson.
In addition, the Yankees announced that RHP Danny Otero, who was claimed earlier this week and then waived when Demel was claimed, has been claimed off waivers by Oakland.
Subtracting the players who will begin or are expected to begin the season on the disabled list, the Yankees have just 25 players left in Major League camp, with first baseman Lyle Overbay the only one not on the 40-man roster.
In regards to Overbay, general manager Brian Cashman said Thursday that the team had a Friday deadline to make a decision on him and would indeed finalize one, and Andy McCullough of the Newark Star-Ledger Tweeted after Friday’s game that Overbay told the media he was told he will make the Opening Day roster, and the team would have to make one other 40-man roster move to accommodate him.
Cashman did tell the media on Friday, however, that he will continue to scour the wires for players who may be released in the waning hours of the spring, but if nothing else is done, it appears that Brennan Boesch, Overbay, Francisco, and Nix have claimed the final open position player spots and RHPs Adam Warren, Shawn Kelley, and Cody Eppley will join Mariano Rivera, David Robertson, Joba Chamberlain, and Boone Logan in the bullpen on Opening Day.
