The New York Yankees had not officially announced a deal for outfielder Vernon Wells as of 2 p.m. Tuesday, but it appears as if he is in fact a Bronx Bomber.

Wells arrived at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa earlier this afternoon and spoke to reporters shortly before 2 p.m., saying “I’m honored to be here,” and was listed in the clubhouse as hitting sixth and playing left field for the Yankees when they face Houston tonight at 7 p.m.

According to YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits, Wells has a locker between those of Bobby Wilson and Francisco Cervelli, and he has been issued jersey No. 56.

The Yankees’ rumored deal for Wells, which would see the Angels kick in roughly two-thirds of the $42 million owed to the outfielder over the next two years, would have been subject to a physical and the approval of the Commissioner’s Office, due to the money involved; with Wells in Tampa, it appears that both steps have been passed, and an official announcement of the deal – including what the Yankees gave up in exchange – could be coming any minute.
