Yankees Pre-Game Notes: March 21
The big news out of Yankees camp is the semi-shutdown of Derek Jeter, who Brian Cashman said will not appear in another Major League game this spring so that the Yankees can protect their ability to backdate any potential trip to the disabled list.
The Yankees will, however, have Robinson Cano back tonight, as the World Baseball Classic MVP is ready to reclaim his throne as the team’s second baseman and No. 3 hitter. He’ll be next to Kevin Youkilis both in the order and on the diamond, as Youk will hit cleanup and shift to first base tonight while Jayson Nix mans the hot corner.
The rest of the lineup behind righty David Phelps tonight:
Brett Gardner CF
Ichiro Suzuki LF
Robinson Cano 2B
Kevin Youkilis 1B
Travis Hafner DH
Brennan Boesch RF
Eduardo Nunez SS
Jayson Nix 3B
Francisco Cervelli C
Behind Phelps, the Yankees have Mariano Rivera, David Robertson, Boone Logan, and David Aardsma listed as pitching today; Logan, who threw a scoreless inning on Tuesday, would be making his second appearance of the spring, while Robertson would be pitching on back-to-back days after throwing in the sixth inning of Wednesday’s win over Boston as well.
Today’s listed second string has catcher Austin Romine up from Minor League camp to back up Cervelli, Ronnier Mustelier – who was scratched Wednesday because of swelling in his leg – back and listed at third base, and Addison Maruszak, a utility infielder who played left field in the later innings yesterday, back out in left once again.
The full reserve squad: Romine, 1B Dan Johnson, 2B Gil Velazquez, SS Walter Ibarra, Mustelier, Maruszak, CF Melky Mesa, and RF Thomas Neal.
