Go All-Access with new Yankee Kevin Youkilis
Youk explains new batting stance and more on all-new Yankees Access special
Those are the words of new Yankee Kevin Youkilis from his all new Yankees Access special hosted by Jack Curry, which premieres on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 10:30 p.m. ET, immediately following the Nets Post-Game Show on YES.
As part of the Yankees Access experience, Youkilis and Curry discussed a number of different topics, from Youk’s career to his courtship wife Julie (whose brother happens to be New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady) to the Yankees’ courtship of him, and the 33-year-old third baseman is very candid in telling the tale of how he got to where he is.
However, with all of the change surrounding Youkilis over the last year as he’s gone from Boston to Chicago to New York, the biggest change may be in something Yankees fans will see every day this summer: his batting stance.
Youkilis has been famous for his unique stance, but as you’ll see in Yankees Access, the 33-year-old slugger explains to Curry how he came up with that stance, and how he and Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long have worked to tweak the stance to help Youk become a more productive hitter.
“This is what I was doing last year,” Youkilis explains in demonstrating his previous stance for Curry, “but Kevin Long would be (mad) I did it. So I come up and I get here (into his old stance), and then take a big stride and go down…drop my hands and go.” Later, Youkilis gives Curry a sneak peek of his new modified stance, saying that it’s more of an “athletic, linebacker-like” stance and explaining why it will help him be more productive in 2013.
“(In my old stance), I had to drop my hands, and a lot of times I’d pull off, which results in rollover or just missing it and popping up to right,” Youkilis explained. “My main thing is trying to get more balanced, and get my hands out (lower) and shorten the delivery.”
You can see the full clip of Youkilis’ new stance, as well as an all-access look inside the life of the three-time All-Star, on Yankees Access, premiering Feb. 5 at 10:30 p.m. ET.
