Minor League baseball teams often come up with fun and sometimes unusual promotions and giveaways to attract fans, such as the Trenton Thunder’s giveaway of a “Robinson Ca-Gnome” last season.

One team in the independent Frontier League may have taken the cake on Friday, however, announcing a promotion for 2013 that is, in reality, too good to be true.

The Florence (KY) Freedom announced in a release Friday that on May 23, they will be giving away “Manti Te’o girlfriend bobbleheads” to the first 1,000 fans who enter UC Health Stadium, with the giveaway literally being an empty box – a promotion designed to have a little fun with the recent news that 2012 Heisman Trophy finalist Te’o may have been the victim of a faux-girlfriend hoax.

"This will be the best kind of bobblehead a fan could get," Freedom General Manager Josh Anderson said in the release, “because now fans can make the bobblehead out to be whatever they want it to be."

That won’t be the only promotion of the night according to the release, which also says:

To add to the imaginary fun, section 115 will be blocked and reserved only for fans to sit with their imaginary friends, girlfriends/boyfriends or spouses. There will also be a make pretend kiss cam, air guitar contest and an imaginary food fight outside the Airheads Kids Zone.

The Frontier League is a 14-team independent league with teams in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, as well as one full-time travel team, and will begin the 2013 season in mid-May.

The Freedom are one of the more popular and more successful teams in the league, and are coming off an appearance in the Frontier League Championship Series in 2012.
