Yanks officially announce Youkilis signing

The New York Yankees today announced they have signed infielder Kevin Youkilis to a one-year contract for the 2013 season.

Youkilis, 33 (birthday is March 15, 1979), is a career .283 (1,030-for-3,644) batter with 641 runs, 247 doubles, 18 triples, 148 home runs and 610 RBI in 1,033 games with Boston (2004-12) and Chicago-AL (2012). He owns a .298 (296-for-994) career batting average with 44 home runs against left-handed pitchers, including a .319 (153-for-480) combined mark over the last four years (2009-12).

He combined to hit .235 (103-for-438) with 19 home runs and 60RBI in 122 games with the Red Sox and the White Sox in 2012, after being acquired by Chicago-AL on June 24, 2012, along with cash considerations in exchange for INF Brent Lillibridge and RHP Zach Stewart.  Youkilis also spent nearly a month on the disabled list from April 29 through May 22 with a lower back strain.

A three-time All-Star (2008, ’09, ’11) and one-time Gold Glove Award winner (2007 at first base), Youkilis is a career .306 (34-for-111) batter in postseason play with 22 runs, nine doubles, six home runs and 17 RBI in 29 games. He was also a member of World Series-winning teams in 2004 and 2007 with Boston.

During his career Youkilis has appeared at first base (548 starts), third base (398 starts), second base (one start) and the outfield, making 19 starts in left field and appearing twice as a defensive replacement in right field.

Originally selected by Boston in the eighth round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, Youkilis hails from Cincinnati, Ohio, and attended the University of Cincinnati.
