The New York Yankees have been hard at work in Nashville trying to land a third baseman to replace the injured Alex Rodriguez until at least June. In a span of about 60 minutes, two names came off the list, including a familiar face.

Jon Heyman was first to report that Eric Chavez is headed to the Arizona Diamondbacks on a one-year deal worth $3 million. Earlier on Wednesday, Jeff Keppinger signed a three-year deal at about $12 million with the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees were very interested in Keppinger, 32, who plays first, second and third base, and comes off his best season with the Tampa Bay Rays (.325-9-40, .806 OPS in 418 plate appearances).

Chavez, who turns 35 on Friday, was a valuable reserve for the Yankees in 2011 at third base, first base and designated hitter. He batted .281 with 16 home runs in 113 games.
