Two Yankees named AFL Top Prospects
Catcher Austin Romine and RHP Mark Montgomery were chosen for this year’s team, which is selected by AFL managers and coaches on the basis of both Fall League performance and Major League projectability.
Romine hit just .222 this fall, but had the second highest OPS (.628) of full-time catchers, while Montgomery continued his stellar season of strikeouts by fanning 19 in 10.1 innings and allowing just five walks and five hits.
The Top Prospects Team also includes some notable names – including Reds outfielder Billy Hamilton, who set a Minor League record for steals this season, and Mariners catcher Mike Zunino, who was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft – but one name it didn’t include is Yankees outfielder Slade Heathcott.
Long considered a high-ceiling prospect, Heathcott finished fourth in the AFL with a .388 average, was second in OPS (1.106), and placed in the Top 10 in several other categories, but was left off the list of six outfielders chosen.
