Steelers to fly to NJ Sunday to face Giants
As the NFL normally requires that teams arrive a day early for road games, the Steelers had planned to fly into New Jersey on Saturday and stay at the Westin in Jersey City; however, that hotel is still without power as a result of Hurricane Sandy, so the NFL has waived the requirement – and the Steelers will instead fly from Pittsburgh to Newark on Sunday.
According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Steelers personnel checked into many other hotels in the region, but were unable to find one close enough with enough vacancy – and also didn’t want to take away that inventory from folks in the area who may be seeking alternate shelter because of storm damage.
Instead, Bouchette said, the Steelers will leave Pittsburgh mid-morning for the one-hour flight to Newark Liberty International Airport, eat a pre-game meal at a nearby hotel, and then be bussed to MetLife Stadium for the 4:25 p.m. start.
