Pineda may not be ready until summer
The New York Yankees were hoping Michael Pineda, who missed the entire 2012 season and had surgery in May to repair a torn labrum, would be ready for Spring Training. However, general manager Brian Cashman told Ian O’ Connor’s ESPN New York radio show on Sunday that Pineda won’t be a player until at least June of 2013.
"We have to keep him off our radar for now," Cashman said of the 23-year-old right-hander. “We're talking June of next year ... the second half of next year.”
Pineda was acquired from the Seattle Mariners on January 13, along with pitching prospect Jose Campos, for prized Yankees catching prospect Jesus Montero and right-hander Hector Noesi. While Pineda’s road to recovery remains a long one, Campos, who missed most of last season with elbow soreness, was scheduled to participate in the Instructional League and expected to be healthy in time for when pitchers and catchers report next February.
