The Yankees are expected to call up outfielder Melky Mesa from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre prior to Tuesday’s game in Boston.

Mesa, 25, is on the 40-man roster, and hit .264 with 23 home runs, 67 RBI, 22 stolen bases, and an .805 OPS this season between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton.

He began the year in Trenton, posting a .277-14-46 line in 88 games and earning an Eastern League All-Star selection before being promoted to Triple-A on August 2; once in Scranton, Mesa hit .230-9-21 in 33 games, and hit the walk-off two-run home run that give SWB their lone win of the 2012 postseason last Friday night.

While there is no indication how much playing time Mesa might receive down the stretch, he could be a valuable piece of insurance for the Yankees. Mark Teixeira is expected to be sidelined at least 10-14 days after re-aggravating his strained left calf, meaning that Nick Swisher will likely see a majority of his time over the next two weeks at first base – leaving the Yankees short a regular outfielder.
