Trenton Thunder clinch EL Playoff berth
The Double-A Thunder clinched an EL playoff berth on Tuesday night, defeating the New Britain Rock Cats 7-4 at Waterfront Park to ensure their return to the postseason after a one-year absence.
The Thunder got the job done behind another strong performance from lefty Vidal Nuno (9-5), who allowed just one run over six innings. Offensively, outfielder Adonis Garcia smashed two of the Thunder’s four home runs, with his solo shot in the sixth extending Trenton’s single-season franchise record to 158.
David Adams and Addison Maruszak also went deep for the Thunder, and Ryan Pope notched the final five outs to earn his fifth save and lock up the playoff berth.
With said berth in hand, the Thunder can now turn their attention to capturing the EL’s Eastern Division crown. As of Wednesday, their magic number to clinch is three, as they hold a four-game lead over the Reading Phillies in the standings with six games left on the schedule.
Trenton will wrap up the regular season on September 3 in Binghamton against the Mets, and then will begin their EL semifinal series against either Reading or New Britain on September 5.
The Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees have also clinched a postseason berth, and as of Wednesday need just one more win (or one Pawtucket Red Sox loss) in the final week of the International League season to clinch the IL Northern Division title. SWB will also begin their playoff run on September 5, and as the North Division champion faces the league’s Wild Card in the first round, they are likely to be matched up against Pawtucket.
