Yankees promote Melky Mesa to Triple-A
The 25-year-old Mesa was promoted after hitting .277 with 14 home runs, 46 RBI, 18 doubles, and 17 stolen bases in 88 games with Double-A Trenton. He was one of the Thunder’s representatives in the Eastern League All-Star Game on July 11, and had been especially hot over the last month, hitting .324 with an .890 OPS.
Mesa is on the Yankees’ 40-man roster, and on Thursday, he played his first game with the Triple-A Yankees – who had just released a handful of outfielders the night before – going 0-for-3 as the starting center fielder.
To replace Mesa on the Trenton roster, the Yankees are expected to promote Cuban outfielder Adonis Garcia from Class-A Advanced Tampa. Garcia was signed as an international free agent in May, and the 27-year-old was hitting .236 at Tampa through Thursday but had four multi-hit games in his last 10.
