Ochocinco becomes Chad Johnson again
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chad (formerly) Ochocinco has legally changed his last name back to Johnson, officially filing the name change in a Broward County, Florida courthouse on Monday.
Johnson, who became “Ochocinco” on August 29, 2008 so that he could circumvent NFL uniform rules and wear his nickname on his back, married reality star Evelyn Lozada on July 4 – and his new wife was known to be less than thrilled about adopting a numerical surname.
Chad had hinted at a reversion to his birth surname numerous times in the last couple years, with one famous instance coming when he told reporters back in January 2010 that he would make the change if Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis shut him down in the Bengals’ season finale in New York.
Monday, he finally went through with it, and for the small fee of cuatrocientos uno dolares ($401), Evelyn is now officially a Mrs. Johnson.
"I'm refocused and locked in. Time to get back to the old me," Johnson told ESPN.com on Monday. "I'm just doing it for the marriage. It has nothing to do with football. Ochocinco is still in me. It's just my middle name."
Johnson had changed his name on his Twitter account weeks ago, not long after signing with the Dolphins.
