Blue Jays place Jose Bautista on 15-day DL
The Blue Jays have not released any further details on the injury, as they are awaiting the results of an MRI taken earlier Tuesday.
The injury either occurred or was exacerbated during Monday night’s game against the Yankees, as Bautista dropped to the ground in pain after fouling off a pitch during his at-bat in the fifth inning. After being examined by trainers, the slugger was lifted from the game and replaced by pinch-hitter Ben Francisco.
The loss of “Joey Bats” will be a tough one for Toronto, as the three-time All-Star is second in the American League with 27 home runs and third in the AL with 65 RBI through Monday. Bautista has led the Majors in home runs for the past two seasons, and reached the finals of last week’s Home Run Derby after being selected to the event by AL captain Robinson Cano.
To replace Bautista on the roster, the Blue Jays have called up outfield prospect Anthony Gose, who was one of the players they acquired from Philadelphia for Roy Halladay two years ago. Gose, who was hitting .292 at Triple-A Las Vegas and led the Pacific Coast League with 29 stolen bases, is expected to be in uniform in time for Tuesday’s game at Yankee Stadium.
