It’s been more than a decade since Jose Canseco hit his last Major League home run – October 3, 2001, off the Yankees’ Mike Mussina, to be exact – but according to the slugger, he would be the favorite for Monday night’s Home Run Derby.

“I would win the MLB Home Run Derby tonight if given the chance,” Canseco Tweeted early Monday morning, a statement that a handful of followers retweeted along with their disagreement (in various states of candor).

Canseco did hit 462 home runs in a Major League career that spanned from 1985-2001, including 37 games (and six homers) with the Yankees in 2000, and is at least still in the game, having spent the last few years playing in various independent leagues.

This season, however, the now 48-year-old former “Bash Brother” has played just 20 games for the Worcester Tornadoes of the Canadian-American Association, and after putting up a line of .194-1-7 with just two total extra-base hits and a .250 slugging percentage in 84 plate appearances, he was placed on the disabled list in mid-June to “heal various nagging injuries.”

Clearly, his pride isn’t part of the above statement, but much to Canseco’s chagrin, the Dodgers’ Matt Kemp will be the only current disabled player taking swings in the MLB Derby.
