Yanks ink top Venezuelan prospect
According to a report in the New York Post, the Yankees have inked 16-year-old Venezuelan catcher Luis Torrens to a deal worth $1.3 million. The Post report quotes a talent evaluator as saying that Torrens “is the premier talent in Latin America,” and Baseball America rates the backstop as the No. 2 international prospect.
Baseball America's scouting report lists the 6-foot, 170-pound Torrens, who trained with former Yankees international scouting director Carlos Rios, as "a former infielder who converted to catching in February" who "stands out for his right-handed bat."
Earlier in the day, the Dominican Prospect League announced that the Yankees had signed Baez for $650,000.
