With their lone pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, the New York Knicks went international, selecting 6-foot-8 forward Kostas Papanikolaou from Greece with the No. 47 overall selection in the second round.
The 21-year-old was the Eurobasket.com All-Greek A1 League Player of the Year in 2011-12 and helped his Olympiacos team win both the Greek National and Euroleague Championships last season.
While many scouts regard Papanikolaou as one of the best young players in Europe, the selection is likely a forward-looking one for the Knicks, as the young Greek star is also thought to be a “draft and stash” player who will stay overseas for the next few years.
