St. John’s University freshman phenom Maurice Harkless told the New York Daily News on Wednesday that he didn’t care whether he was drafted No. 11 or No. 25, as long as he went to a “good situation.”
Harkless got his wish Thursday night, as the Philadelphia 76ers drafted the 19-year-old with the No. 15 overall selection in the 2012 NBA Draft.
The 6-foot-8 small forward started all 32 games in his lone season with the Red Storm, averaging 15.5 points and 8.6 rebounds per game and becoming just the second St. John’s player to earn Big East Rookie of the Year honors.
Harkless is the first St. John’s player drafted since Omar Cook was selected by Orlando in 2001, and at No. 15, he is the highest Johnnie taken since Malik Sealy went No. 14 overall to Indiana in 1994.
