The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees are looking to start anew in 2013, and in addition to their newly-redone stadium, the team is also looking for a new name.

To get that name, the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate has decided to let baseball fans unleash their creative sides, developing a contest that will let the public decide on the nickname that will grace the team’s uniforms in 2013 and beyond.

Through July 5, fans can submit new nickname ideas for the franchise by either logging on to swbyankees.com and entering their choice or filling out an entry form available at the team’s headquarters in Moosic, Penn. Six finalists will be chosen by team executives in early July, and the community will vote for their favorite until July 30.

"While we continue intense preparation for SWB's 2013 season in a newly renovated stadium, today's 'Name the Team' contest is but another important milestone in our efforts," said Art Matin, CEO of Mandalay Baseball (the conglomerate that co-owns the team). "In addition to baseball, the reconstructed ballpark itself will be a home for NEPA (northeastern Pennsylvania) and the surrounding areas where all residents can have a sense of community pride - and it all begins with them having a key role in renaming the team."

The top-level Baby Bombers have already undergone an unofficial name change for 2012, as they are also using the “Empire State Yankees” moniker to reflect the fact that their “home” games are being played in upstate New York this season. With PNC Field being renovated, the team is playing most of their home dates in Rochester, with a handful also being contested in Batavia, N.Y.

Whoever submits the winning name will win more than just bragging rights, as they will also earn a pair of 2013 season tickets and the right to throw out the first pitch at one of next year's home games.
