After the Yankees lost CC Sabathia before and Andy Pettitte during Wednesday’s 4-3 win over the Cleveland Indians, one could understand if manager Joe Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman were harried, upset, or even downright confused in their post-game press conferences.

But as they always are, Girardi and Cashman were cool in the face of chaos, and the pair already has the wheels in motion to replace the two lefties the Yankees will be without over the next few weeks.

“Bad day for left-handers, but guys are just going to have to step up,” Girardi said after his team completed a sweep of the Indians. “Adam Warren's going to be here to make that start for us on Friday (against Chicago) and we'll move Freddy now to Monday (against Tampa Bay) ... guys have to step up."

With CC Sabathia to miss his next two starts with a strained groin and Pettitte out at least four-to-six weeks with a fractured ankle, the onus is on the veteran Garcia and the rookie Warren – who will be making his Major League debut on Friday – to be those guys.

Cashman, for one, isn’t worried.

“Obviously we had two losses today, but the good teams roll through that stuff and we’ll have to find a way to roll through it,” the GM said after the game. “Freddy Garcia has been chomping at the bit looking for that opportunity (to get back in the rotation) and Warren will get the ball on Friday, and we’ll continue to evaluate what we’ve got.”

The GM stressed multiple times that the Yankees will first look to fill their suddenly-thin rotation from within, but the men who will earn at least the first opportunities have earned his trust in the short-term.

“Freddy is someone that can figure it out, and we’re more surprised about how the season started for him than how he’s pitching lately,” Cashman said. “I appreciate what he’s done … It’s hard to take a veteran and get him to go to the bullpen, but he did it. He waited for his opportunity, and now it’s come back around. We know what he’s capable of, and hopefully he can do it again.”

As for Warren, who will be the third rookie hurler to make his debut with the Yankees this year, Cashman said he’ll have a chance to get any jitters out of his system before he takes the hill against the White Sox.

“Warren is having a good year and he’s earned the opportunity. We’re excited to get a chance to see what he’s got, and I know this is a day he’s been dreaming of. Whatever happens, we believe he’s a big league starter, but he’ll get a chance to come in here tomorrow and soak up the atmosphere, get used to the Yankee Stadium setting and the team we’re playing, and be prepared for his start on Friday.”

Another man who could be in the mix in both the short and long-term is David Phelps, who made the team out of Spring Training as the long reliever but was optioned to Class-A Tampa on June 14 to get his arm stretched back out into starting shape.

“He was up to about 55 pitches in his last Florida State League appearance, and should be good for 65-70 in his next outing,” Cashman said of Phelps, “so we’ll look at whether we bring him up here and stretch him out that way, or keep him going down there.”

And even if Garcia, Warren, and Phelps aren’t the long-term answer in place of Pettitte or perhaps Sabathia, Cashman used the same words as Girardi to once again stress that those within the organization will get the first chance to be so.

“You just try to piece it together and turn from within first and foremost … I prefer not to go outside. You have to have alternatives, and this gives opportunities for guys to step up.”
