The New York Yankees have officially signed second-round pick Austin Aune to a contract with a reported $1 million signing bonus.

Aune, the No. 89 overall choice, was a shortstop and outfielder at Argyle High School in Argyle, Texas, but will begin his career in the Yankees organization at short.

According to a Baseball America scouting report, Aune “offers an impressive package of tools, starting with plus raw power and arm strength … He has a balanced left-handed stroke and solid speed, and scouts praise his makeup as well.”

Aune was actually a two-sport star at Argyle HS, also having quarterbacked Argyle’s football team to the Texas Class 3-A State Championship Game last fall. He was chosen at No. 89 overall with a compensatory selection the Yankees received for failing to sign last year’s second rounder, Sam Stafford, and had been committed to play both football and baseball at Texas Christian University prior to signing.
