06/12/2012 5:57 PM ET
The Boston Red Sox have released outfielder Marlon Byrd, three days after designating him for assignment.
Byrd hit .270 with one home run and seven RBI in 34 games for the Red Sox, who acquired the 34-year-old from the Chicago Cubs on April 21 to provide a boost to their injury-plagued outfield.
Overall, Byrd has hit .243 overall in 143 at-bats for the Cubs and Red Sox this season.
He was designated for assignment on Saturday when the Red Sox activated pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka off the 60-day disabled list.
