Hideki Matsui is back in the Majors, as the Tampa Bay Rays purchased the 37-year-old outfielder/designated hitter’s contract from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday.

Matsui, who signed a Minor League deal with the Rays on April 30, was hitting just .170 with no home runs in 47 at-bats at Triple-A, but is expected to platoon with Luke Scott as the Rays’ DH and could start as soon as Tuesday.

He hit .251 with 12 home runs and 72 RBI while serving mostly as a DH for Oakland last season, and is a career .285 hitter with 173 home runs in nine seasons with the Yankees, Angels, and Athletics.

To make room for Matsui, the Rays optioned outfielder Stephen Vogt to Durham and transferred outfielder Brandon Guyer (left shoulder strain) to the 60-day disabled list.
