Yankees call up OF Freddy Guzman
The 28-year-old has not appeared in the major leagues for nearly two years. He was acquired from Baltimore on Aug. 31 for a player to be named or cash and hit .286 (6 for 21) with seven steals for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He batted .235 (4 for 17) with one homer and two steals in the International League playoffs.
Guzman, who also played in the minors this year for Seattle and Boston, would be a second pinch runner option in addition to Brett Gardner.
"It's just an added dimension, you know, another speed guy that you could do some things late in the ballgame that puts pressure on the defense, puts pressure on the pitcher that's in the game," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before Monday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels. "We have, you know, more than one guy that you could probably pinch run for in our lineup at times if you needed to score."
Guzman appeared in 20 games for San Diego in 2004 and 17 games for Texas in 2006 and 2007. He has a .213 major league average with five steals.
"I know in the playoffs sometimes they need some base stealing," he said.
To clear a spot on their 40-man roster, the Yankees designated right-hander Anthony Claggett for assignment.
Guzman filled the last open locker-between Derek Jeter and A.J. Burnett- in the Yankees clubhouse at their new stadium, which holds space for 36 players.
