Yankees have another run-in with ump Foster
Girardi and third baseman Alex Rodriguez(notes) were ejected by Foster on Sunday after another series of animated arguments involving the New York manager, umpire and one of the Yankees' biggest stars.
Rodriguez became upset during New York's 13-3 victory over Baltimore after he struck out looking with the bases loaded in the fourth on a pitch he said was a ball. He had a brief argument with Foster before taking his position in the field.
After Baltimore went down in order, the slugger looked at a video replay of the pitch before returning to the dugout. He said he made a remark to Foster about his constant conversation with Orioles catcher Chad Moeller that also was going on during his at-bat in the fourth.
"I just said, 'Yeah, keep talking to him,' and no warning, he just threw me out," Rodriguez said.
Girardi, who said A-Rod was ejected after again telling Foster that the pitch was outside, then bolted out of the dugout and had to be held back by another umpire during one of his most animated displays in two years as New York's manager.
"These games are extremely important to us and I just thought he could've warned him," Girardi said. "You know, he could've said, 'That's enough. If you say another word you're gone.' And I didn't think what Al said warranted him getting thrown out of the game."
Foster described Rodriguez's fifth career ejection and first since July 24, 2004, as a running argument that started after his at-bat in the fourth.
"I let him go, I let him go, but there has to be an end of it," he said. "I can't let him argue with me all day."
It was Girardi's fourth ejection of the season and first since Foster kicked him out on July 6 after a close play at third led to a rare argument from Derek Jeter.
Jeter was called out on an attempted steal in the first inning of a 7-6 loss to Toronto, even though replays showed he got a hand on the bag before he was tagged by Scott Rolen. The Yankees captain insisted afterward that Foster told him he didn't have to be tagged to be out.
Rodriguez playfully told Jeter not to laugh before he recounted his disagreement with Foster.
"I don't know what his deal is with the Yankees, but again, to tell Jeter to get off the field and to throw me out without a warning," Rodriguez said. "In the heat of the moment not arguing balls and strikes, I think there should be a little room for error where you can actually argue, take out your frustration and let the game go on."
Girardi said the play with Jeter had no effect on his latest argument with Foster.
"Each event is always an individual event," the manager said.
